Preparing for an Interview with No Specific Job Opening (Informational Interview)


Hey Everybody! It’s Andy! Welcome to my
show where I help you build a career you love today we’re gonna talk about how to
prepare for an interview when there’s no specific job opening now some of you you
know I get been getting this question a lot and some of you come up with these
scenarios we’re gonna cover a whole bunch that I think are gonna be
applicable today some of you might be calling these informational interviews
sometimes you might be going to a network meeting with somebody who is
maybe influential maybe you could hire you or certainly put a good word in on
your behalf maybe you can turn into something sweet maybe you submitted your
resume through a corporate career portal and the company just said hey we welcome
inquiries and it turned into an interview and you’re not quite sure what
the job is or maybe your your friend gave the chief marketing officer your
resume and she said sure I’ll have a conversation with him or maybe maybe you
got an interview you know what the job title is but the job description is thin
how are you going to be prepared it’s gonna be a lot of fun I love this topic
been getting this question a ton if you’re here with me live and you’re and
you’re watching this with me we’re gonna just get in there get in a chat let me
know who you are where you’re from what you need put some question marks in
front of your questions if you’re watching this on the recording welcome
to you it’s good time live office hours Thursday so let’s let’s have some fun
with this so I think you got the scenarios let’s talk about the tactics
so when you go into these sessions and you got to make sure that you are you
are actually prepared you know a lot of people don’t know where to start what is
it that I should should cover how should I make sure I know what I’m doing I’m
covering the right stuff I’m gonna give you I don’t know maybe seven eight nine
nine things that I want you to do and then I got a little bonus tip for you at
the end but the first thing that I want you to do is first make an assumption
that it is an interview it’s it’s it’s it’s okay to do that if you are
underprepared that’s bad there’s no such thing as being
over-prepared so just assume that as you go into this session with whomever it is
whether it’s one multiple people you treat it as though
you are being interviewed for a potential opportunity that’d be the
first thing and so with that mindset these are the things that I want you to
that I want you to take a peek at the first one got my note cards today first
one is on the company you know I usually start you out with the warm-ups and then
they get a little more creative as we go but this first one there’s a couple
parts to this make sure you are looking up the company it’s it’s obviously the
most important thing that you you need to understand what are its products what
are its services what does the divisions look what did the divisions look like
what is the organizational structure what does that look like where does this
particular person sit inside that organization anything you can find out
about the company you should know it is and I and this goes for all the points
I’m gonna share with you today it is entirely too easy these days to get it
information you need to even if the company is private all companies have a
digital footprint it’s pretty easy to find your way around the internet to
find this stuff that’s the first the first thing but the second thing that I
would say related to that I’ve got this this one I call this one one a but you
really ought to understand beyond the company what the market is that their
end what’s going on news wise what’s trending right I always keep praying
every day when I get up that what am I one of my youtube videos will be
trending it’s not seem to happen yet but but but what’s happening in the market
what are the trends what’s in the news what are organizations doing what does
the competitive landscape look like for this particular organization what what
do they do what are other organizations that do the same types of things whether
it’s product development service offerings you really should be be
knowledgeable about all that the more knowledgeable you are about the market
the more effective you’ll be able to discuss whatever comes up in the
discussion second thing second big grouping is you got to research the
interviewer I know this sounds obvious but I dare I say
when I interview a candidate as part of my recruitment firm I will tell you that
over 90% of them this floors me don’t have any idea who I am they have no clue
what I do what my history has been anything like that well I ask them so is
there what do you know about me and most of them say well not much you know I
talked to Kara and she said you don’t talk to Andi I mean this is this is this
is really what happens I mean it’s just it’s just that there’s no excuse for you
not to take a few minutes and take a look at whoever it is that you’re going
to be meeting with in this type of situation you there is a great
likelihood 99 percent chance you know who you’re actually going to be meeting
with if it’s an informational interview you certainly do if you’re going in into
the organization it for an interview itself they’re going to tell you who it
is you’re going to be speaking with very likely so I would do tons of homework on
the interviewer I want I want you to make sure that you exhaust all avenues
you look at everything you possibly can go to all the social sites go to
LinkedIn obviously but I would go to Facebook I would go to Twitter I would
go to Instagram I would know everything I possibly could about the person that I
was going to speak with it’s not stalking them if it’s in the public
domain people have a digital footprint so you should be able to find out that
information it should be pretty easy to type my name in Google and see 50 pages
of stuff and even if you don’t look at every single thing the fact that you
know that the person has done a lot has been a lot to a lot of places has spoken
at particular conferences or written books or whatever it is that they’ve
done is pretty easy to find out and even if you don’t like I said even if you
don’t know everything at least know hey you’ve done a lot I saw you had quite a
few things out there I saw this and I saw that at least enough to have a
conversation now you don’t need to bring up the fact that you know what my
favorite cocktail is or my favorite wine is or any of that stuff but the fact is
just have it in the back of your mind if you need it but I would do my research
on the interviewer I just don’t understand why people epically fail this
they epically fail this all right third thing is I would look
okay you have you don’t want me to tell you how many times it took me to draw
this particular card there’s you there’s there’s you there’s them and there’s an
intersection of what you do and can bring to the table and what they do and
I want to stress the word what they do not necessarily what they need at the
moment but right now you don’t know what they need unless they’ve given you that
in advance but the great likelihood is you don’t know that so what is it you
know that you bring to the table what it what is it that they do that
intersection is where you provide the most value now if God is shining on you
that day what you do and what they do in that particular intersection is exactly
what they need but the great likelihood is it isn’t exactly what they need at
this moment otherwise they would be very very crystal clear about here’s what we
need here’s the job description here’s what we want you to do so if you’re in a
situation where you’re not quite sure what that job opening is or you’re not
quite sure whether this is gonna lead to a job opening you have to you have to be
able to ascertain this information we’ll talk about this in a minute or two but
but the first thing that I want you to do is from a preparation standpoint I
want you to make sure hey these are the assets I bring to the table here is what
they do it would make sense that a company that services these types of
desktop products would need somebody like me because I’m knowledgeable about
that particular desktop product that kind of stuff but that’s what you want
to make sure of you you understand what it is that you can bring to the table
from an obvious standpoint so make sure all of that is in order and then the
other thing is take a look at the people in the organization so I’m talking about
you know go to the company in LinkedIn and look at who’s there what their
titles are what it is that they’ve put in their LinkedIn profile or any other
places sometimes there’s little BIOS on the corporate website but ultimately
what you’re trying to do is you’re trying to get it who are the people that
work there what is it that they do what is it that they’re called right if
you if you are just using some basic LinkedIn searching you should be able to
get at this we do have more in my job search boot camp we have some advanced
tactics where we give you some Google strings to be able to be more targeted
to find the particular individuals based on job functions and titles and those
kinds of things but anybody who’s got access to LinkedIn which all of you
should have just going to LinkedIn do some searching on the company see what
they’re calling those people look at the description see if you know anybody see
if they’re doing the kinds of things that you can do but just get an idea of
what they’re calling those people what they’re doing and use that as data and
then what I would do next is then I would take that and I would perhaps look
at job descriptions if they are available in the company there might be
some job descriptions now what you don’t know is what you know you might see the
responsibilities you might be able to iterate between this and this and go
kind of go back and forth between what are the job descriptions and are there
people out on LinkedIn and vice versa but the fact that matter is just because
there’s a job description out there does not necessarily mean there’s an open
position on that team it doesn’t mean they might have it filled they might
have in you never know if they have individuals who they are looking to
replace you don’t know if they might want to create a new position that might
have some of those responsibilities with some of the things you can bring to the
table but I would go and I would take a look at all the job descriptions in the
organization see which one or ones closely match to what it is that you do
then what I would do is I would take a look at all of their competitors again
you did this as part of evaluating the company but I would do it on a more
specific basis I would probably do a couple of things here I’d look for their
competition who are the organizations that they compete with I would look at
those job descriptions and what the job descriptions are of their competitors
now it’s not always gonna be a one for one a system engineer over here might
not do the same thing as a system engineer over there and what you’re
looking for is you’re looking for what type what would that competitor
the positions that I could perhaps do what would the makeup of that role look
like and what’s really great to tuck away in your mind is if you’re having a
conversation with somebody in this in this info informational interview or
this potential interview you will be amazed when you can say things like hey
you know I was evaluating some of your competitors I noticed that their
engineers have this suite of responsibilities which I think is really
great because and there’s advantages to that and so on that might fit with what
you do and and these these might be eye-opening to the people that you’re
talking to it may not be but still I would want to know that I would want to
know maybe there’s something that interests you at one of their
competitors it’s okay to talk about this stuff depending on you know kind of what
the theme is of this interaction that you’re going through and depending on
how formal or informal of an interview it might be but that’s great Intel that
you can get you can go to sites like indeed calm and even career builder and
– there’s all these all these other sites not necessarily to apply through
those sites but just to look to see what those job descriptions look like you can
also go obviously to the competitors career portals so I would do that here’s
one other thing I can’t believe how many people do this one when they meet with
me they don’t bring their resume and you never know if it’s an interview and
you’re going in to a corporation and you’re meeting them at their location
this is probably going to be on your mind but if you’re meeting somebody at a
coffee shop or something like that you might forget to do this bring your
resume you don’t have to shove it in front of their face unless they ask for
it or if you ask them and they want it that’s totally okay but don’t forget
this and the other thing that I would bring I would bring I would be a little
careful about jamming it into into their face as well is depending on your
position is it worth bringing a portfolio or sample work products or
other things we have some of our clients that we’re working with right now they
request all this stuff so we try to ask people in advance if they have some
things that they want to share with us you never know how this might really
come off well here again I want you to pull this out in in the natural course
of the discussion not hey I got a bunch of work
stuff that I just did or I’ve done and I’m really proud of it do you want to
see it but more like if it if it comes up in the conversation hey would you
would you be interested I actually have some that stuff with me is different
there’s a different tone to that and it’s usually a little bit more welcome
it’s better well-received if it’s done that way so don’t don’t don’t forget
this stuff now I would do all of those things I would get you know I would get
myself dialed up and then and then here’s the one bonus tip that I want to
get you third that I want to give you with with the interaction itself the one
thing that’s really important I had that little that little picture up with the
circles where I was talking about the intersection between you them and and
the in the intersection and where you provide value if you’re super fortunate
they’re gonna come to the table and say hey this is great we’re in need of a
system engineer that’s fine rarely will that happen in these types of situations
it’s going to be incumbent upon you to try to figure out where do I want to
take this discussion the big mistake that a lot of people make is they just
they just want to talk about themselves right well here’s what I do here’s where
I’ve been when you would be far better served if you could elicit from the
other party hey where’s your company going right now what’s its biggest need
what is the biggest need on your team right what what would be at this very
moment what would be the best way anybody could help you and then try to
get that out early so that if you are gonna talk about yourself you’re gonna
talk about it in the context of what they need at the moment you’re looking
for that segue in if they start the conversation with hey tell me about you
and you know just tell me about your background or whatever say hey I’d love
to do that I’m happy to share all that I’d love to do it in the context of you
know what it is that that you might need or your greatest need at the moment so
you know just as a bonus tip when you start that discussion and you start that
meeting or you start that interview you always want to make sure that you know
what their immediate gap is and it’s okay if their mind at the moment is a
little malleable as far as how they might be able to deploy you because
some of the greatest positions that we have ever filled as a recruitment firm
have come on the heels of one of our clients creating or tailoring a position
for one of our candidates that they saw that they love same thing can happen for
you here so so keep that in mind so I hope that helped I hope that helps just
just try to keep those points in order those seven or eight or nine or whatever
it was that I that I shared with you but that’s how I would prepare that’s all
the data that I would want to know as I go into the discussion and if you have
that data the great thing about having that data is it’s going to allow you to
be nimble on your feet to take that conversation anywhere which is what you
want to be able to do all right hope that serves you sixteen minutes let’s I
want to go to the Q&A but I got a couple of quick announcements and the first

you know a job opening exists because you were able to locate it or if you
don’t know if a job opening exists so I give you a couple but the rest of the

a little bit about me tell me about you and what you need I am genuine in asking
for that and I want you to reply and then I show you you know kind of here’s
their way around the community and then people respond to that email when they
respond to that email I read the stories but I don’t always have time to respond
to everybody now if somebody responds to me when I welcome them to my community
if they say hey I’m a stay-at-home mom I’m trying to get back to work wonderful
you gave me your issue I respond to you and I say hey go take this free booklet
and check this video out and this is going to get you started in the right
place and so I can get back to you because I can do that very quickly hey
I’m a military veteran who blahblah great I got a military booklet it’s not
as popularly known but I have all this stuff and as an extension of what I’m
saying is if you have any Mitchy issue anything like is you type
your YouTube questions to me or you type questions to me on my blog if you took
whatever you were about to ask me and actually put it in the search bar on my
youtube channel it would likely come up the answer or a video or whatever and so
you know somebody asked me yesterday about you know how do I increase my
confidence I have a video on that how do I write a cover letter when there’s no
when I don’t see a job I have a video on that so all of that stuff is there so I
would I would highly encourage you to try those steps and then if you do want
my support then you got to jump into the boot camp because that’s really where I
that’s really where I help those people and they have access to me and they can
put their questions in in the system and I and I answer them so I just I know you
I know you sent that to me but it’s just impractical for me to be able to read
all that and respond all right a gardener to 971 let’s go Andy and just
finished oh so I read that book and not only that one
I got stop doing that shit as well that’s his next one so I and I was
reminded yes that’s right I subscribed it I didn’t love the book
but it was it was a fast read and it it was good you know there was some good
tidbits in there I liked it enough that I bought his next one but I read a lot
of stuff I read a lot of stuff and I really fast so hope that helps
we got a question about the resume program the $49 does not include me
reviewing your resume if if you want me to review your resume that’s $500 so
just so you know and normally I only do that as an add-on to the boot campers
but if you go and you get the $49 resume resume master class and you do what I
show you then I will review it if you want the add-on service but it’s not
free it isn’t free hey Evelyn oh how are you on the resume can you
a highlight as an accomplishment in the respective work experience or should it
be rewarded Evelyn oh not only can you but you should okay so what Evelyn is
asking is in my recommended resume template and there are exceptions
there’s a profile to summary up top then you have career highlights I recommend
three people like things in threes I recommend three and each one of those
highlights should then be buried inside your professional experience section
wherever it wherever it was so that’ll put context for which company you did
that which community you did that and so on so yes to that Evelyn alright next one Evelyn Oh video
interview you mentioned to have your notes ready is it okay if they see you
looking at your notes because even if you post them around your PC screen your
eyes will look there so Evelyn those particular that particular reference I
was making was in a in a video interview that’s a one-way so there’s me there’s
my webcam or my my webcam or my laptop camera my whatever and I’m in the frame
of the window and they’re recording me and they’re giving me they’re sending me
on the computer screen a question to answer so tell me about a time when so
on so forth whatever it is when I said it you can have your notes or your
stickies or whatever go ahead and put them up but what I would do is I would
look at the camera I would I’m talking about have your
notes ready because there’s usually a minute or two of think time that they
give you depending on how long they want to give you what system you’re using and
what they set it to and what question they’re asking sometimes they give you a
designated amount of time to think sometimes they vary the amount of time
that you can think so that’s what I was talking about I would not read from my
notes I would look at the camera always all right now we’re talking Joseph loose Trey
that’s what I wanted my friend it’s like the third time in a row loose Trey I
love it I have a phone screen for a remote QA engineering position the
company reviews on Glassdoor indicates some problems with leadership my concern
is that as a remote employee I’d be the first out let go if they had to make
cuts how much do we believe in Glassdoor and how can I best ask the company about
their leadership any tips on remote areas okay there’s a there’s a ton of
different stuff there so Joe Joseph let’s let’s cover this one at a time and
I get that ah you know I got a little bug in front of my in front of my stuff
all right you know I just you know light live streaming this so it is what it is
all right so first thing Glassdoor it’s a bunch of nonsense okay it really is I
mean you know I can I could give you the you know polite answer but the fact of
the matter is that most of the stuff out there is garbage
written by employees who are unhappy they’re pissed off and lots of times
they create extra fake IDs and they go out there and they just write whatever
they want about the employers this stuff is true okay it believe me it happens a
lot right the happy employees they’re too busy being happy to go out and spend
time to fix all that crap that all up all the unhappy employees are putting
out there however I don’t mind you looking at the stuff I don’t want you to
I want you to remember this just because one person didn’t get along with that
leader or five people didn’t get along with that leader does not mean that you
will not it also they could have changed out the leadership it could have been a
while ago it who knows okay it what you you pull one guy out one gal out a lot
of things can change but the way the way that I would approach this is so first
off I don’t even look at Glassdoor if I was going into an interview I probably
wouldn’t even waste my time there I’d be focused on other things I’d be
focused on in other areas but let’s say you look you go you look you do your
cursory stuff you notice this that that the leadership it’s not great
first off that is nothing to do with you being remote it has everything to do
what somebody was unhappy with this leadership team what I would do in my
interview is I would say hey look you know what I as part of my due diligence
I looked at Glassdoor and I noticed there were some less than flattering
remarks about the leadership team I know how those things go I know that unhappy
people go out there and they want to tell the whole world but I figured I
would at least ask to get your perspective on this and I would leave
that question super open-ended and almost just like I said it right there
just I’d love to get your take on that is there anything you can share about
that situation that’s it I’m I’m you know I had there
are different ways I like to design different types of questions when I’m
talking about something like that what I have just said to the person who’s
fielding that question is don’t you worry
I’m a sane person I’m not stupid enough to believe all that stuff that’s out
there I just want to get your take on it because I’m doing the prudent thing
that’s what they heard okay so so that’s that’s how I would treat that and then I
would hear what they say and I would investigate it for myself I trust my
judgment more than I trust anybody else’s judgment in the world okay you
should trust your judgment too so so that’s that’s how I would deal with that
now any tips for remote interviews if you’re talking about remote interviews
as it relates to video interviewing I’ve got a ton of stuff out there we just did
one the other day and I did one exactly a year ago August 18th 2018 on video
interview tips for job seekers I would I would highly recommend that
obviously you are gonna have some phone screens
I do have an article on phone screens you can check that out I would also get
this guy all of this stuff that’s in here in the interview intervention book
is all the tips and techniques that I would teach you about interviewing in
general whether you’re doing it remotely or whether you’re doing it in person so
that’s those are my thoughts on that one and thank you for helping me pronounce

only getting it I’m only at 10:15 okay damn Stark I’m wrapping up my job means
list would it be possible for you to give me an example or two of your own so
I could make sure they are as strong as they can be many things I hope you’re
well I am well you are welcome so we’ll answer all this backwards my my needs
are they they tend to focus on the driver and the benefit and how I fulfill
the benefit so for me when I decided that I wanted to be a recruiter or then
I wanted to be a trainer my needs have to do with what drives me at the core
that’s going to benefit somebody else so I want to be able to teach you now the
reason that my needs tend to be at that level is because the medium by which I
teach you is number one constantly changing so I started to teach you with
a blog and then I gave you a book and then I gave you a podcast and then I
gave you a video and then I gave you webinars and now I give you coffees you
know career and coffees and live office hours and endless time then I gave you a
boot camp and so on so what happens is the how I satiate the need to teach you
is constantly changing and but but the what the driver never changed and the
benefit to you never changed static is it will be aesthetic on the day I die
as it was on the day I I knew that that was my passion so the reason
that I am able to and in all the successful people who are have sustained
what it is that they do is because their love for what it is that they’re doing
in the need that they identified their passion for it was so hot it will never
burn out no matter what the world throws in them that makes them change how they
need to do what it is that they want to do so if I want to be a teacher badly
enough I will do whatever I need to do to meet you wherever you need to be met
to get you the message that you need but what happens to a lot of people is they
don’t want to learn all these new things they don’t want to be patient and build
a community they don’t want to figure out well if that marketing tactic didn’t
work maybe it wasn’t the product maybe it wasn’t all this stuff takes a lot of
time so those are all House H OWS right but the what might need to teach you
never changed there’s other things on my list like freedom guess what I would
take a million dollars less a year to work for myself and have total control
and I would work for myself 24 hours a day then earn a million dollars more or
something like that if you know what I mean I mean and you get what I’m saying
the extreme because that’s important to me so I’m willing to keep going and keep
going and make sure my business is thriving and working and all that good
stuff but that you need to make sure that that will never change no matter
what you you do that you’re wise in order and then what it is that will
satiate you and then how it is you’ll deliver it is immaterial okay so because
that’s gonna keep changing and you won’t have control over that
so that’s how I know that I’m in the right spot all right all right Evelyn
any advice when a third interview entails giving a 15-minute presentation
I do have advice and Evelyn I don’t I don’t know if you’re in my leadership
program if I don’t think you are so two things really quick for anybody who is
in the leadership program I gave the art of persuasion talked last month
and I went through all the seven or eight points of the presentation the
sequence in which you need to say it and that that skeleton and outline can be
applied to any any anything any time you need to convince somebody if I don’t
think you are in there and if you are not in the leadership program then I
wrote an article a long while back on seven essential point seven essentials
to make sure they get your point I think that’s it and it’s a written article
it’s obviously not anywhere near as deep as a 40-minute discussion where I go
take you through everything but I would check that out and I would take pieces
of what I said in the seven essentials and I would make that my outline for my
presentation and then you pick the topic so hope that helps and yes you are maybe

though all right oh wait so Jenny I think you didn’t mean
101 I think you meant wanted to all right I had a phone screen with third
party recruiter last Friday Eve okay and all seemed swell said she would email me
materials to review and touch base Monday to see about a meeting with a
client okay didn’t get the email so I called on Monday and left a voicemail
still crickets or VM states that I can reach her faster by text so should I try
that before moving on boot camp for wannabe okay look so first thought we’d
love to have you in the boot camp and there is an entire section on this but
so a couple things on executive recruiters Jenny the so executive
recruiters are driven based on their clients needs and for anybody who wants
more about working with executive and third-party search firms I have a video
out there on my youtube channel it’s totally
to these strange birds but check it out it’s really effective now for you what I
always tell people is you never know what’s happening with this with this
woman so it’s it’s Thursday what is disappointing is that she said
she’s gonna get back to you on Monday if something came up and she you know
something got delayed something you know came up or she had to review a couple
more candidates or the client decided to downgrade the priority or or eliminate
it or another search firm filled it or whatever it might be what I would
appreciate is that recruiter getting back to you saying I know I mentioned
I’d touch base with you on Monday so I am I want to let you know I’m still
working this and I will swing back by whenever that is so with her I would I
would not have called her Monday I would not have emailed her Monday I would have
waited until Wednesday so yesterday and if if if I called her
and her her her message says you’ll get me faster by text I would not have left
a voicemail I don’t know if you did leave a voicemail but I would then text
her say hey just want to follow up see if you had any news it would be short it
would be incredibly brief and that would be that and then I would wait to hear
from her and that’s it I wouldn’t call I would not even bother to call her again
that’s me knowing how these folks work so if she liked you she’ll get back to
you she should get back to you because she said she would but not everybody
processes the world the way us polite people do so I hope that helps Marcus
how are you currently thank you for the best currently interviewing with a law
firm as entry-level attorney second interview in a meeting with HR okay what
should I expect cultural stuff typical HR cultural stuff
where are you going what are you interested in you know what you know
what kind of environment you want to be in it’s it’s it it be that stuff
especially if you are entry-level like is it especially if you were entry
level what am i meeting with why am i meeting with HR it’s probably their
standard protocol is this the person who hires meet no and then decides my
compensation definitely not and then what power does this person
have well this person is going to turn to whichever lawyer or lawyers are in
charge of hiring you into their unit and this person is going to give them you
know his or her take on you know your on you and a lot of that’s going to be
dependent on your attitude your demeanor your enthusiasm your interest level your
communication skills and all that good stuff so this is Stan I mean standard
stuff you know that’s normal so I mean you didn’t say anything there that
strikes me as odd mom how you doing and mom are you uh still in California give
Mia and Marissa and Sam a hug for me please we can’t wait to get you back
home we’re going out with Jenny and time tonight I mean we would have loved if
you guys could have made it but but yes it’s gonna be fun Kent Harrison Peterson

boot camp has put me at the top of the stack folks you hear that can we just
pause for a second cat is a new boot camp member and blitz through it and is
an all-around super gal and I appreciate that plug with so much opportunity how
I know when to stop looking and let me see if I can get through just in case
you and how greedy should I be I got my first offer yesterday yay an interview
with a gift Oh different company on Monday and since
I’m a boot camper and have read interview it will it will go great and I
expect another I I would think so I got a reach out from a former boss who
wants to have lunch this week plus last week I was busy networking and meant a
ton of people who I haven’t even followed up with any of them yet yes
because we that was awesome the job I was offered is doubling my salary thanks
to your degree and somewhere I could see myself happy but it’s hard to tell so
okay I I love that story i I just I love that okay so first off can we all get a
big shout out and a big clap for my bootcamp work at Harrison Peterson who’s
an all-around great person and gives great coffee mugs as gifts so here’s
what I here’s what I do I made a list of all the things I wanted in a house right
like I looked at one house and then I looked at another house and I we bought
this one now my wife looked at a bunch more but I knew what I wanted I knew I
knew it when I see it put it in your boot camp terms you went through all
your requirements you right you matched them all up if you feel like this is a
great opportunity and it marries up with your requirements and you feel like hey
this is pretty awesome and hey it’s a good salary right 2x can’t wait to get
this testimonial by the way I if it’s me I would I would I would take a look at
anything that I have in motion meaning meaning I already have my meeting set
like I already know and see if there’s an appropriate window that you can give
them that says okay this is great like so you’ve already got the offer but but
what I would have advised you before you got the offer was make
sure that if you’ve got other things going that you give them a window that
says hey I mean I’m in the middle of a process with these other organizations
I’m gonna need a week or I’m going to need two weeks or whatever it is in
order to to give you a decision I can’t answer how greedy you should be or
whether you should take it what I as coach I want you to go back to the
process do you feel like this matches and marries up well did you do your due
diligence here’s here here’s the other thing there you know did you get all
your questions answered did you ask the final eight questions you know the
questions you’ve got to ask yourself before you accept any job right I think
we’ve talked about that if you haven’t seen that video check that video out
right eight great questions ask yourself before you take any job or eight
questions you need to ask yourself before you take any job and make sure
you got all that and you’re okay with the answers nothing questionable asking period in in the interview
process but if all of that lines up and there are no red flags then and you love
this company and it matches up your requirements and the other stuff you
cannot complete it in a reasonable amount of time there’s a lot of ifs here
right if you if you feel like hey if I go on this interview or that interview
or I talk to you know old bosses and old friends and whatever and I can get a
good indication of what that will be like that’s one thing if you don’t feel
if you feel like you’re gonna need weeks and weeks to go through these other
processes I probably would forego those in favor of some of something that
really matched up so you and I probably need to talk this through but because
there’s a lot of stuff there and I do think that you will be successful
whether you accept this job or whether you you consider some of the other ones
but I do like the fact that you are getting the traction and you’re doing
the right stuff and all that good stuff this is you know I have for every
anybody who’s out there we I have been getting a so I get I get I get this
situation a lot with the boot because they they are able to surface
these offers and a lot of times they have multiple offers they want to speak
with me so they have a coaching session the other thing that I we’ve never
really offered this to the public but I’ll just mention it because we’re on
the subject is even if you’re not in my boot camp there’s there’s certain
reasons why my one-on-one coaching is set up the way it’s set up you can buy a
packet of the coaching or you can you can add an add-on service as a boot
camper the reason that that’s the set up the way it is is because I want to make
sure that the person has the right framework to go through the process and
make the right decisions that you should be you know that you should be targeting
the right companies because they they align with you and your needs and you
are looking at the right career and your you are doing the right things to
evaluate the organizations and that’s why I don’t want to just have one little
sink single solitary coaching session with individuals if I cannot ensure that
they’ve been through that process however I have an exception because
we’ve been getting a lot of these requests and we’ve been doing this
successfully with people we have people come to me late stage and they have
offers or they have an offer and they want to talk with me about how do I
negotiate this to make it more effective or how do I think through these offers
if you are already there and you want coaching just send an email to support
at mal walk calm because I mean we seem to have a bunch of these every week
where people say hey look I’m right there I’m in the money I want your help
to maximize it or I want your help to pick the right one and we’ve been
incredibly effective at helping those people in those situations so if that’s
you it’s just something to consider in its a lot maybe a lot easier for them
because then they’re looking at the coaching call is an investment and
believe me I can get you more than five hundred dollars more on your counters so
it’s anyways just something to think about all right let’s see let me go back
Dmitry hi Andy and everyone I’ve left the previous employer during a trial
period because of discomfort with my bosses management style okay how to
handle it in an interview I’m looking for a job fast
is it good so the one thing that is obviously touchy about this situation
is that you were in a trial period and if you selected to leave so there’s a
couple things you’re gonna have to do if you’re if you’re interviewing with me
and you and I say okay Demetri hey what what happened here right you were there
only a few months or whatever it was I’m assuming it was like within 90 days if
you said to me Annie you know what I really thought I’d love the company I
got there it wasn’t exactly like I thought my boss’s management style
wasn’t you know we didn’t we didn’t seem to gel and I thought it was just better
that I move on however I take full responsibility because I should have
better investigated detected or whatever so that I should have foreseen that this
was going to be a problem and I didn’t but I’ve learned from it and now I’m in
a better position to evaluate my next employer and whether I will be a good
fit there you’re gonna have to own it so you own it I’m gonna comment I’m gonna
look I’m gonna overlook it I will if you own it if you get into this boss was a
crazy man or a crazy gal or you know mercurial and all this other stuff
that’s not gonna fly so I just say it say it quick own it talk about how you
improved and then move on I don’t you know I’m ready to look if I’m excited
about moving forward that’s it and there’s no good way to do that
but that’s the best way to dampen it venice’

my best if you want me to review your resume what I do when I review a resume
is I ask everybody to follow certain instructions meaning I want you to go
through the steps I want you to use the proper template I want you to write the
bullets in the style a particular way to get the stuff in to make sure the
benefits are upfront and this and all that I give you all the structure if you
go through all that and if you’ve gone through the resume writing class or
you’ve gone through my job search bootcamp you will have done that and in
that all that’s great you send me your word template and then
I go in and I literally edit everything so I I use the track changes I go
through I edit everything literally down to the periods and the semicolons and
then I also if there’s any raw material so to speak that’s missing then I put in
in notations and yellow highlights and then I ask any questions and then I say
hey can you put this here or what was that there and so on that’s $500 that
will never change it’s $500 in will always be $500 they take me a long time
they’re highly valuable and and and and I can only do so many each week so but
yes and if you if you if you need that service if you are in the resume writing
master class as long the reason that I do so truth be told for everybody the
reason that I will not review a resume or write a resume that has not gone
through my protocols is because I would spend I would spend a whole day
rewriting the thing and I wouldn’t I would have to charge you thousands and
thousands of dollars which I don’t want to do so that’s why I want you to follow
my steps but I give you all the tools and it doesn’t take that long if you
just put the time in watch the videos take the templates use the booklet ask
yourself the questions put the stuff in and give it to me and then I can edit it
because I have all the raw material it’s in the right form and it’s sequence the
right way so that’s that’s why I do that but it just send it and if any of you

everybody competes for your inbox how most people in the corporate world if
you are you a non email marketer are sending one little email to a to a boss
potential boss manager VP director whatever there’s a great likelihood that
they’re going to read it so just anything professional interested in
working with you interested in working with your company or something maybe
maybe you know something about you know interested in I’m interested in joining
your team or something like that does not have to be anything fancy and it
shouldn’t be they will open it up and they will look inside and they will see
what’s in there it’s different when somebody like me is sending you emails
and I need to make sure that I am immediately making a connection between
what I’m sending you and what’s inside and it’s enticing enough for you to open
it because you get you get more emails from me and people like me that you’ve
probably subscribed to so it’s it’s it’s a much bigger issue for me but when
you’re sending a boss hunting cover letter and it’s you sending one email I

jobs needs list so everybody I want you not to just get a job and I know some of
you just want a job but this is the eighth this is the eighth class here
we’re not like I want to give you everything I got to make sure that you
are in your dream job you make proper choices you are directed you never
fizzle out just like that story I talked about with me being a teacher and what
that takes the jobs needs list I call it your happiness criteria you can call it
whatever you want but this is a list of what it is that you need to make you
happy consider it a virtual environment that
you were operating in every minute of every day seven days a week of which
many of those waking hours are spent at your job so everything that you need
I need a growing company I want to be challenged in this particular way I want
to make sure that there is a propensity for career growth
I would love right a flexible schedule I would I want a reasonable commute I only
want to travel 50% whatever it is you can you can you can dial it up and a
couple really great assets to do that in the interview intervention book the
first chapter is about this okay I would highly recommend this and then I have a
video out there called how to choose the right job check that out I go through
in some detail of what exactly this should look like and how you should use
it it’s a phenomenal if you are interested in making sure that you’re
making a good choice among the different opportunities that you have and choice
could be this career or that career or that career choice could be this company
this company or this company choice could be this role this role this role
whatever it might be but it will help steer you in the right direction I’m not
gonna go into all the mechanics of the page and how I would how I would list
these and rank them and weight them and so on I go into that in the video I
would check that out though it’s it’s a it’s a good one and it’s like the first
step well it technically it’s the third step but it’s really the first step that
you should take before you even start looking a scene hey Charlene cracker

of interviews with about 300 with a 300 person consulting company after
interviews I’ve been told that they decided they prefer me for a more senior
position sounds good but they are only generating but they’re only generating
proposals to client they are considering bringing me in on investment I’m happy
and I feel like I’m in limbo at the same time what’s the question ah
Mel Mel I’m not sure what you what the question is there other than maybe you
sharing I would not I would be happy and I would be really happy if they feel
bringing you in is an investment meaning that they know you’re gonna be valuable
long-term I like the way that company thinks what I can’t stand is a lot of
these consultancies they don’t want to bring you on until they got a project
for you right away cuz they don’t want to incur you know

applying and you get to the questions regarding demographics veteran status
disability status what should I do I have a disability mentioned but afraid
it will put a red X on my resume so I might answer Shauna for everything is to
be honest and when when you know a lot of these questions are okay to ask they
actually are in in virtually any I think any state not all questions are legal
but those questions I believe are and if the disability itself does not affect
your ability to do the job I would not worry about it but I I’m not an expert
as it relates to legalities of that but I would say that I just think honesty is
the best policy I really do and as mayor of fact a lot
of times if that is a concern I would go back to what
I always preach about how to find your job is through networking and all that
other good stuff and most of the time people are filling out applications
after the fact after they’ve already gotten any interviews so that is where
I’d be spending a lot of my time anyway but I I’m I’m always a honesty’s the
best policy kind of thing Marino how are you from Toronto wonderful Oh cat you
are suck you are such a dear my my I if any was on the fence about investment in
the boot camp just read my long story above and do it I’ll never imagined I

Melanie one of three my resume was given to a recruiter in a company by an
associate working for the company the resume was not submitted for specific
opening but tailored for types of consulting oh yeah for the types of work
a consulting company does okay and let’s see led to an interview for four
specific positions the resume highlighted broad background not
tailored where’s this other one several interviewers commented the
resume didn’t highlight specific experiences related to the open position
explained I didn’t post do you have any advice yes
Melonie create a quick one-page addendum that is specific and send it and
circulate it if ever this happens to any of you I would immediately say I would
have done this before I went to the specific positions for the interview for
the position if there tie you’re talking to somebody and this is hey wait there’s
something specific in mind we’d like to interview you for what is that
because as I that content I gave you regarding my resume was more of a broad
you know kind of a broad spectrum I have specific a list of specific activities
that are more tailored to that type of work and I’ll be happy to send you that
addendum or whatever Exhibit A or whatever you want to call it and I would
send it say it’s it you know as part of my consulting work package or whatever
but I would send that immediately and so that way you’re not explaining it and
you’re getting them to focus on that it’s not ideal and in fact matter is if
you’re in there interviewing and somebody determined that you should be
interviewed for a particular position the resume is the least of my worries
so I meaning if I’m an interviewer I’m one I want to talk to you and I want to
understand I mean I would just ask you how does what you do a line I mean
that’s how I would approach that but not everybody’s like that but that’s what I
would do all right let me see if I hang in one

while I filmed it differ separately it’s basically the same content but you you

resume questions I want you guys focused on that resume I want to be there for

change their nicknames so yes I know who you are finished interviews of the
company each good been several weeks only reply we’re thinking I’m anxious
how long can it take a company to decide so obviously obviously Bob I don’t I
don’t know the specific situation of what they’re what they’re going through
there’s what we call a balk there’s right there’s I’m there’s hey I’m not
sure if you’re the right person that’s one thing
Hey we have other candidates or well we’d like to see more people just to be
sure right there’s that scenario then there’s the the balk we don’t know if
we’re actually gonna hire for the position there’s a number of these
things I mean I’ve got stories in the back of my head where people you know
that we go in the interview company puts it on hold three weeks later they call
all right oh go go go go right right then it’s
three months later it’s one time we in two years later I mean like this stuff
happens obviously you are in the mode right now but I am I is really hard to
to say my words of encouragement to you are though and I would say this to
anybody and because I always want you to control what you can control you can’t
control getting them to respond to you you could do your appropriate follow-ups
that’s totally okay right I’m checking in seven days wait 14 days checking it
again and so on and then what you should be doing is spending a lot of time
focusing on other companies and I can I think you’re working though so you know
either your employer or um you know you lightly look for other opportunities
that and surface them as you can but you reaching out to the other
organizations targeting other companies and so on is what you can control and
that’s what I would focus on your I mean you’re you’re worth it right all right
all right tn i-i-i think that’s how you pronounce
me but i’m not sure but if it’s not let me know and i know we went through you
know that the whole you sent me that email got a phone interview yesterday
the HR the HR asked my expected salary then I used your uneducated to answer
her then she went further to ask my current salary and attempted me to
answer her and said we’ll keep it as a secret and said we’ll keep it it I’m
assuming you you said that I did not give him my question is why does HR
wanted to know this don’t feel offended by any stretch the reason that they want
to know is they just want to make sure that in their mind they’re they’re not
spending a lot of time with somebody who has unrealistic expectations about what
their salary ought to be it in my opinion my friend it is a silly question
for them to be asking the more they like you and the more you fit and the better
value you provide them the more they’re willing to pay the more you like them
the less you’re willing to take that’s how the world works for everything in
life supply demand want perceived value and
so on so I would not be too too hung up and if
I got to if I got to shoot that video over again instead of using the word
uneducated I probably would use the word uninformed because you you uneducated I
think you know I’m doing this stuff on the fly right and and and and I think
that has a connotation like you didn’t do your homework I’m not saying you
didn’t do your homework cuz I think you did and everybody else but you know
somebody might interpret it that way so I would probably use uninformed instead
of uneducated and if you are being pressed this goes for any of you what I
would my alternate answer is if they say no no no I need a number be
I’m super silly HR recruiter gatekeeper and I can’t move forward without a
number which is total nonsense but let’s just say you feel them turning red right
then what I would say to them is hey you obviously have a budget in mind if you
just want to share the range with me I could just let you know if that’s okay
and then what I would do is I would say yes no matter what it was just about
because then I would want to go into the interview process and crush it and then
make them exceed that if if that was appropriate but the fact the matter is
they just need a number to put down on a piece of paper and then they want to be
able to move on thinking okay if it gets down to the end you know he or she’s
gonna take it so that’s why they do it it’s sad
we never as a recruiter we never ask what you want in the way of expected
salary we never ask what would it take to get you to leave we never answer what
does the job pay my answer is the better you interview the more value you get you
bring them the more you get right and you know that’s just the way it is so I
did silly all right Artie add to the above question recruiter is an in
company one ok corporate recruiter been responsive but each week it’s been the
team still wants to meet on it well I I think don’t let it get to you my friend
and the other thing is I think this sends signals about what the company is
like right what would the company be like to work for so I just you know

concerned about allocating time best apps coursework networking and son Peter
my friend I got a job search master class for you it’s free do that so I
don’t think were I don’t think we’re circulating it as per carat cool I don’t
think we’re circulating the job search master class as part of the Welcome
process anymore but for anybody who is interested in the three like three
really primary aspects of your job search I have a job search master class
it’s three videos you can go and sign up for it on my they have to opt in okay

you get like an email right away it says welcome to the master class then you get
a vide right you get the video in the in the welcome and it’s about setting
yourself up with your requirements so some of that stuff that Adam Stark was
asking me about and somebody else had asked me to comment on the jobs needs
and that kind of stuff that’s the front that’s the front part get dead dialed in
second thing is how do you allocate your time based on my historical statistics
of how people find jobs based on their demographic who you are where you are
what you earn how right how old you are where you live and so on and then I tell
you exactly how to allocate your time now Peter I don’t know if you are a full
time job searching in which case I’d say go 40 hours at it maybe you have a job
and you can only do it morning’s lunch nights weekends or whatever doesn’t
matter I give you the percentages and that’s how I would allocate my time
spent and I go into networking and so on and so forth okay so what I would do and
what I wouldn’t do and if I’d go to this and that and that kind of stuff
that’s the second and then the third thing there’s a job
interviewing component to that and so that’s a it’s a three part video series
it’s really good we did it July 2018 it was a smash and it’s still
there I mean I mean I can only advertise so many of these things so much but but
that job search master class is is really really great and it will it will
help you it will help you in his Murphy I probably got another one out there
that’s even older about why your job search is taking so long
it’s a video I think it might be a live office hours session that we did but
don’t do me a favor numero uno don’t beat yourself up you do not do this for
a living I do this for a living right you get paid to do something else you’re
not supposed to know how to job search if you do know how to job search really
effectively then I get a little worried but go easy on yourself we’re here for
you get in the check the free stuff out if you really need to if you want more
structure more framework and all that good stuff and a lot more contact with
me that’s what the job search boot camp is for obviously that’s a premium course
but but I would try that I think I think that will really help you and it will
really be eye-opening it really will okay Gargant well the Queen of England

time I should shoot for in an interview no there is not it is not about the
amount of time it takes you it is about the way you package your story my
recommendation is you gotta get interview intervention if you don’t have

thing for those of you who really want to tighten up your interviewing skills I

recently found you well welcome we all give April J a big live office

an HR generalist and supervising HR position at the same time I have a
master’s degree in HR but not the experience yet my suggestion
April and I with just whatever however many characters that is and not not
knowing you or your background my my suggestion would be to apply to the
generalist position you get in there and get the interview and what companies
likely will do what I’m assuming wait sorry what one thing that’s not clear as
I was just thinking about as I was answering this
there’s HR generalist positions then there’s kind of head of HR or
supervising positions i if you are speaking about there’s I don’t know if
there’s two open positions at one company or if you’re just talking about
in general can I apply for both my suggestion would be to look at what the
requirements are in the Job Description and I’m not saying you got to hit all
the requirements but your master’s in HR is not gonna is not gonna automatically
leap you up and over the HR generalist position so they are much much more apt
to go after somebody who’s got working knowledge of HR and is in you know is a
SP HR or you know right in sure based stuff or I HR designated has those
credentials so I would probably go for the generalist positions and if you
interview well and they want to elevate you into a higher position then great
but I I think you’d probably have better luck with the generals position then
just my initial reaction hello Toya they I know I know what you mean they can be
stressful Deepak how can I prepare myself to answer a question of
me not having a degree the degree makes no difference in your ability to answer
a question Deepak I would just not worry but you can’t write you don’t have the
degree in a degree talk about what you what you do have which is experienced
seven years right in a completed diploma in computers you I would not I would not
get too hung up right I mean you you have experience and I believe you
mentioned this to me before all right hey folks I got a run I’m a little over
